Lab Values

Our lab is a welcoming environment where scientists of any race, religion, color, age, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, neurodiversity, or ability can thrive. We recognize that academia, and specifically the aquatic sciences, can be an unwelcoming place for minorities. We also acknowledge that Boston has a long history of racial discrimination and that much of our research takes place on land that was forcibly taken from the Massachusett, Mashpee Wampanoag, Narragansett, Nauset, and Agawam tribes. To this end, we engage regularly in group readings and discussions and mentorship/recruitment/science-sharing activities. We view these activities to be equally as important as our research because racism, prejudice, and implicit bias adversely affect how we do science—and whom this science benefits. Together, we commit to make science more inclusive, equitable, and accessible.

Poster with the phrase 'In this lab, WE BELIEVE' at the top. It features six icons with associated phrases: a microscope labeled 'Science is real,' a rainbow-colored heart labeled 'Love is love,' a clenched fist labeled 'Black Lives matter,' the female symbol labeled 'Women's rights are human rights,' a laboratory flask with a rainbow and ocean scene labeled 'Biogeochemistry is cool,' and the Statue of Liberty labeled 'Immigrants are welcome.'.

We thank Sammy Katta for the original design and inspiration for "In this lab, we believe..."
We thank Mikaela Hoellrich for adapting it to our lab.
