Waquoit Bay - Summer Sampling
We collected our first sediment cores from Waquoit Bay in July 2010! We headed out past the picturesque moorings to our two, of our four, sampling sites. Mary Kay Fox helped us filter bottom water for our core incubations - this was our first time testing our high-volume filtering pump in the field. Our 0.2 micron filtering setup worked quickly and easily to collect water overlaying the sediments. Cores were collected so that we could measure the sediment fluxes of oxygen, nutrients, N2, and nitrous oxide.
In August, we returned to Waquoit Bay to collect more sediment cores. Elise and Ashley headed out to the bay with Mary Kay, and got absolutely filthy and covered in mud once again! After a refreshing dip in the bay to rinse off, we brought the sediment cores back to an environmental chamber at Boston University. Here, the sediment cores were incubated, and samples were collected for dissolved N2 and N2O gases and nutrients.
